  2. The History of the Morison or Morrison Family; by Leonard A. Morrison; Salt Lake City; Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah; US/CAN Film #1036281:

    • p. 17: The Clan MacGhille-Mhuire meaning 'Gille' or 'Servant of the Virgin Mary', from time immemorial have inhabited the extreme northern point of the Isle of Lewis; their chief for many generations have held position of 'breitheamh' or judge of the whole Isle of Lewis. Two tartans: a red Clan tartan & a green hunting tartan. The crest is: two arms, dexter & sword, in pale. Motto: Marte et Mari faventibus, "War & the Sea-faring".

    • P. 19: Resided in District of Ness, near Butt of Lewis. Often made raids on Macauleys

    • P. 20: Emigrated from Scotland to Ireland at time of siege of Derry in 1688, then to Nottingham, NJ in 1727. An aged Morrison in 1750 said, "Maintain the honor and integrity of your family, for the Morrisons come from the best blood of Scotland. They are descended from the Royal Family. Royalty amounts to nothing and only that man is truly Royal who makes himself so by a noble life and heroic deeds".

    • P. 21: Originally spelled Morison; 2nd "R" was added circa 1800.

    • P. 24: 21 Aug 1635, Robert Morrison embarked for Virginia at S. Severne, England.

    • P. 25: McCleods, Macaulys, and Morrisons were the principle clans of Lewis.

    • P. 30: Dun (or Castle) Eystein is a natural stronghold at the northern end, or Ness, of Lewis; in town of Cnoc Aird, to which the Morrisons were want to retire when at war. It is a flat, cliff-like island, oval in shape, 75 yards long & 50 yards broad, separated from mainland by a narrow perpendicular ravine, through which the sea flows at high water. The ravine is 30-40 feet broad and wide. The remains of a strong wall follow the edge of the cliff on the land-ward side of the island, and through this wall are said to have been squints or loopholes for observation and defense. Towards the NE corner is a Dun or castle. Many battles were fought with Macaulays & McCleods on one side and the Morrisons on the other.

    • P. 67: During reign of James 1st of England, a large portion of Ireland fell to King James. To subdue the Irish he induced immigration of Scots in 1612. They were rigid Presbyterians & a bitter feud ensued between the Irish Catholics and the Scottish Protestants. In 1641 there was a massacre of Protestants & over 40,000 perished. Oliver Cromwell, in 1649, avenged and punished the Catholics bringing peace to Ireland. On accession in 1660 of Charles II to throne of England, he appointed his brother, James as Viceroy of Scotland. (James later became James II). James was a bigoted Catholic and the Scottish Presbyterians were the target of his hatred. Thousands of Scots were slaughtered and many fled to Ireland. John Morrison of Londonderry, NH, who died in 1736 was born in Scotland and was among those who fled after the siege of Londonderry, Ireland in 1688-89.
