Pension Application for James Morrison, 13 Feb 1834

On the 13th day of February, 1834 appeared before me, Thomas Hill, a Justice of the Peace in and for the said County, James Morrison aged seventy three years, a resident of the said County of Pocahontas and State aforementioned, who being duly sworn according to the law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the provisions made by the Act of Congress 7 Jun 1832.

That in the spring of 1799, 1780 and 1781 in the County of Augusta in the state of Virginia, he volunteered under the Command of Captain George Clendenen and served against the Indians from about the first of May each year until the fall.

That the nature of his services and the cause of his volunteering was as followeth:

That owing to the hostilities and the depredations committed by the Indians on the inhabitants of Western Virginia ordered sufficient number of men to be kept in garrison for the defense under Military authority. Medical Notes: History of the Famous Wenatchee, Entiat, Chelan and Columbia Valleys:
CHARLES A. MORRISON, a well remembered pioneer of the Wenatchee country, is a native of Virginia, as were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Morrison. In 1853, when our subject was five years of age, the family removed to the Territory of Minnesota, at which time that country was in the first stages of development. When 19 years old, young Mr. Morrison pushed out into the world for himself. He followed railroading for years when he entered the saw mill business, which was destined to claim his attention for forty years. He spent several years in Texas, operating a mill of large capacity....

The Morrisons came to Washington Territory in 1885, locating on Pleasant Prairie, where Mr. Morrison established a saw mill. In 1892 he put a steam mill on upper Squilchuck Creek and entered into contract to furnish lumber to Woods Brothers, a firm doing heavy construction work for the Great Northern Railway. After discharging this contract, he continued in the lumbering business, and gradually built up a substantial fruit box manufactuary. In practical mechanics Mr. Morrison had few equals as was evidenced by the remarkable efficient operations of his milling machinery, and his capacity for work was prodigious. Since the year 1912 Mr. Morrison has been in Florida.

General Notes: Ancestral File: VXJL-JP

Robert Morrison was born in Greenbrier County, Virginia. At the age of two he moved with his parents, John and Mary Morrison and three other children to Lawrence County, Ohio. Robert and Elizabeth McCorkle, parents of Mary Morrison had preceded them by four years. Sometime later the family moved into Pike County, Ohio. Robert received his education in Ohio and taught school there before moving to Illinois.

In 1832 John and Mary moved their family by boat down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River and poled the flat boat up the river to Grafton, then up the Illinois River to Naples where they landed. At that time Naples was in Morgan County, but when Morgan County was divided Naples was part of Scott County, Illinois.

John Morrison bought government land deeds near Oxville where the family settled. Later John acquired some 2000 acres in scattered sections and placed his sons (including Robert) on these farms or ranches.

In the meantime, James and Sara Gillham had homesteaded property four miles north of Winchester, Illinois. Robert Morrison was 21 years old when he arrived and took up farming on one of his father's farms, probably near the Gillham farm. Four years later in December 1836, Robert and Alvira were married. She was 15 1/2 years of age when they began housekeeping near Oxville. About the same time LeRoy Gillham, Alvira's older brother, married Robert's younger sister, Mary Morrison. LeRoy and Mary had three children before he died in 1844.

Robert Morrison continued farming until about 1840, when he went into the merchandizing business in Naples. At first he travelled to and from the farm, but in 1849 the family moved closer to Naples. The store faced East on the bank of the Illinois River. Just north of the store was the boat landing. The family recalled watching the loading and unloading operations through the iron bars in the back of the store. The merchandise consisted of groceries, dry goods and hardware. The Odd Fellows Hall was fitted in the room above the store.

In 1851 the banks of the Illinois River overflowed and Thomas, (then) aged three, recalled the ride in the skiff to dry ground. During the flooding the family went to Winchester and stayed with the Gillhams, Alvira's parents.

In 1854 Robert acquired property and a home southeast (6 1/2 miles) of Jacksonville, Illinois in the Pisgah District, in order to provide better education facilities for his growing family, which at that time consisted of two girls and four boys. The household goods came by wagons but the family traveled by train and had to wait until midnight for the wagons to arrive. The night was spent with Mrs. Estgher Newman, Alvira's sister.

The new home was of older construction and consisted of ten rooms, two large rooms or halls, and a porch. The two large rooms were built of hewn logs with a hallway between and were weather boarded on the outside and plastered on the inside. This home was replaced in 1866 with a modern two story home 32x42, with 13 bedrooms and a large cellar. A sketch of this farm in pen and ink was made in the summer of 1872 by Isaac Pitman and appeared in the Morgan County atlas.

beside farming, Robert Morrison was a livestock dealer, purchasing and shipping cattle to markets in Chicago and New York. His purchases were in such places as Laramie, Wyoming and St. Louis. One transaction, however, proved disastrous. Robert entered into a partnership arrangement to ship hogs to Chicago. His younger brother Richard and two Knowles boys delivered the hogs and received a check for $9000.00 The check was cashed and the money disappeared. A dective was employed and layed the blame on the Knowles boys, who were charged in court. The detective disappeared with the evidence. The case was in the courts for ten years and an out of court settlement was finally made for $1000.00. To cover the loss, the lovely home was mortgaged. During 1877 times were hard and the home was lost at a forced sale.

before the home was lost the family had rented a hose in Jacksonville so that the sons and daughters could attend Illinois College for men or Illinois Female College (the Atheneaum) for women. During this time Lizzie (Morrison) Humphrey's two daughters by her first marriage became part of the Morrison household and were sent to college with Robert's family. Robert was proud of the fact that five sons, two daughters, two granddaughters and two nieces all attended college in Jacksonville. He was also proud that all of them taught school at some time.

In 1874 Robert went intoi merchandising business again with his son, Thomas. A business was purchased in virginia, Illinois and was listed as T. A. Morrison and Company. Robert built a new home in Virginia, Illinois in 1877.

In 1876 Robert's daughter, Lizzie McMillan and son, William had gone into farming in the SW corner of Iowa. Thomas had sold the store and moved to the same area in Iowa. In 1882 Robert and Alvira packed up and moved to Iowa where they remained the rest of their days. Alvira had been in poor health for some time. She died on 21 April 1885 and was buried in Locust grove Cemetery, 14 miles south of Shenandoahy. Robert died 27 June 1889 and was buried beside his wife.

In Jacksonville at dignified occassions he was addressed with the honorary title of Dr. Robert Morrison. It is possible that an honorary degree was given to him for special service in the college community. Frequently among friends he was referred to affectionately as "Uncle Bobby". Alvira, his wife, was "our beloved mother" to her children. At her death a neighbor said, " I'd go many a mile to hear her lead in public prayer. She seemed to speak as though looking right into heaven." Her son, Charles, wrote that "the younger boys might go to school...how she shielded edveryone and spared not herself...that Christian resignation won her the friendship of all." 138

Other circumstantial evidence was furnished which showed that Andrew and James Morrison served at the same frontier fort (Day's Fort at Mill Point), and that Andrew's wife, Elizabeth Taylor had a brother Daniel Taylor who had settled in the Mill Point area about 1773, several years before the Morrison brothers got there about 1779. Conclusions from all of this evidence is attached as "Probable Scenario of Events Concerning Andrew and James Morrison".

33. West Virginia, Jackson County Obituaries, July to December 1914 Obituaries, Jackson County, West Virginia, http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvjackso/obits/1914b.htm. Repository: Rootsweb. Cit. Date: 8 Apr 2003 Surety: 3 George M. MORRISON, former assessor of Jackson County, died at noon Tuesday at the home of his son, Holly MORRISON, near Leon, West Virginia, of complication of diseases, age 63. Mr. MORRISON had been a cripple during the last twenty years of his life, resulting from a fall. Deceased is survived by two sons, Rufus and Holly MORRISON, and one daughter, Mrs. E. D. KING. Following services at the Rockcastle Church, the remains were interred in the SAYRE Cemetery, Sept. 4, 1914.
George M. MORRISON was born November 7, 1852, being the second son of Leroy S. and Annie E. MORRISON, deceased. He was converted on the 11th day of March 1871 and united with the United Brethren Church under the labors of Rev. E. STUTLER by whom he was baptized by immersion. He remained a faithful member of this church until his death. He was married to Sarah E. PARSONS, who survives him, on the 25th day of February 1875 by Rev. W. H. HARRISON. To this union were born three children; one daughter, Laura, and two sons, Holly V. and Rufus T. MORRISON.
He received an injury July 4, 1893, from which he never recovered. A favorite text suggested as a basis at his funeral service will be found in Rev. 14-13. The following hymns were suggested by him, "Nearer My God To Thee", "Jesus, Lover of My Soul", "O Sing to me of Heaven", and "The Uncloudy Day". He talked of his departure with perfect coolness as if he were soon to go on a pleasant journey, gave directions as to his funeral and chose his pallbearers.
His ancestors came from Scotland some time before the Revolutionary War and settled in Pennsylvania. Afterwards one branch of his family moved to Virginia and settled near where the city of Winchester now stands. Later his grandparents removed to Greenbrier County and about 1845 moved to Jackson County. (This was dictated by him in his last illness). Brother MORRISON answered the last call on the 25th day of August 1914, aged 61 years, 9 months and 18 days. He was laid to rest in the Rockcastle Cemetery after funeral services by Rev. CARDER on the 26th day of August 1914. Let us emulate his virtues and strive to live on that we may meet him beyond the river. [written by Tilden PARSONS] (Mountaineer, 28 Aug 1914)

Date: 3 Aug 2002 Surety: 3 James MORRISON: The life of James Morrison so closely parellels that of Andrew Morrison, who is thought to be his brother, that some facts are included.

* 1761: Born in Berkeley County, VA [James' Pension Application]
* ca 1779: Moved to Augusta Co., VA. He reports in his pension request that Augusta Co. later became Greenbrier Co.
* 1779-81: James Morrison served in a garrison on Stamping Creek, a tributary of the Greenbrier River, "then in the county of Pocahontas". Day's Fort, where Andrew Morrison reported he served when he applied for a pension, is located on Stamping Creek. [James' Pension Request; Pocahontas C. Historical Society Newsletter, May 1992
* 1779 or 1780: James Morrison married Mrs. Jane Taylor [Descendants of Nathaniel Morrison]
* 1784: James Morrison returned to Berkeley Co. [James' Pension Request]
* 1787: James returned to Greenbrier County. [James' Pension Request]
* 1793: James Morrison was on the Tax Rolls for Bath County [Bath Co. Records]
* 1834: James applied for a Revolutionary War Pension for service against the Indians. It was rejected for lack of ptoof of six months of service. James was a resident of Pocahontas Co. when he made his application. [James' Pension Request]
* 1858: James died Feb 7, 1858 in Pocahontas Co. A death report is on file in which it is reported that his parents were Thankful and Nathaniel Morrison, and that his last home was "in valley west of Droop" [Greenbrier Co. Death Records]
* 1903: The James Morrison family is written in detail in the Marlinton Newspaper, "Pocahontas Times". This report said James moved from near Hillsboro to the west side of Droop Mountain before 1790. [Pocahontas Times].
. This account virtually parallels that of Andrew, and his death record states that his father and mother were James and Thankful Morrison. This information, which Warren has carefully placed in a time-line corroborates all of the research I have done to date; which is a presumptive conclusion of relationship.

There are 3 others but I am not sure of their accuracy. They are Sarah, John and Hannah.

James was most probably the brother of my George. I have been working on this family for quite some time. They are elusive.

Date: 23 Mar 2002 Surety: 4 Joe Harley sprung quite a surprise on his relatives and friends yesterday when he arrived home on the morning boat, accompanied by Miss Laura Morrison, who has just returned from San Francisco; and announced that that was to be their wedding day. The ceremony was performed at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. Ed. Fitzgerald, at one thirty o'clock in the afternoon in the presence of the immediate relatives. The wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. E. L. Bradley. The young couple leave today for the lake to spend their honeymoon as Joe has a ten-day furlough. His wife will remain with Angeles relatives for the summer, at least, as Joe can arrange for a week-end home visit every other week from Camp Lewis, where he is in the post office department.
