James Morrison was born in 1761 in berkeley County, Virgiia; was married twice. As a youth he lived in Augusta County where he spent four months each year (1779-1781) in military service. After his Revolutionary War service he married Mrs. Jane Taylor, the widow of a Revolutionary War Soldier. They had five children; Andrew, James, John, Nathaniel and Jane. For unknown reasons James and his family returned to Berkely County from 1784-1787. After his wife, Jane's death ca 1795, James married Elizabeth Callison (1796). They had fourteen children; Richard, Elizabeth, Absalom, Alexander, Thomas, David, Jesse, Josiah, Isaac, Elisha, William, Ann, Margaret and Deida.
James lived to be 96 years old and spent his latter years near Droop Mountain in Pocahontas County. There is now a National Park in this area.
From his first family the principal information is about his third son, John, and his descendants. The second family was written up by Reverend William T. Price in the POCAHONTAS TIMES (Marlinton, West Virginia) for Oct 3, 1906 "Biographical Notes, The Morrison Relationship, Descended from James Morrison who came from Winchester", and also the HISTORY OF POCAHONTAS COUNTY, by Rev. William T. Price. Records from the 1850 and 1860 census and several DAR applications were helpful. Birth dates from census records could be plus or minus a year as only ages were recorded. Dorothye E. Knowles of Tucson, Arizona added considerable information on the Thomas Morrison branch and Maria Tenney of Frank, West Virginia added to the Absalom and Thomas families. 37

Medical Notes: History of the Famous Wenatchee, Entiat, Chelan and Columbia Valleys:
CHARLES A. MORRISON, a well remembered pioneer of the Wenatchee country, is a native of Virginia, as were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Morrison. In 1853, when our subject was five years of age, the family removed to the Territory of Minnesota, at which time that country was in the first stages of development. When 19 years old, young Mr. Morrison pushed out into the world for himself. He followed railroading for years when he entered the saw mill business, which was destined to claim his attention for forty years. He spent several years in Texas, operating a mill of large capacity....
The Morrisons came to Washington Territory in 1885, locating on Pleasant Prairie, where Mr. Morrison established a saw mill. In 1892 he put a steam mill on upper Squilchuck Creek and entered into contract to furnish lumber to Woods Brothers, a firm doing heavy construction work for the Great Northern Railway. After discharging this contract, he continued in the lumbering business, and gradually built up a substantial fruit box manufactuary. In practical mechanics Mr. Morrison had few equals as was evidenced by the remarkable efficient operations of his milling machinery, and his capacity for work was prodigious. Since the year 1912 Mr. Morrison has been in Florida.

General Notes:
Robert Morrison was born in Greenbrier County, Virginia. At the age of two he moved with his parents, John and Mary Morrison and three other children to Lawrence County, Ohio. Robert and Elizabeth McCorkle, parents of Mary Morrison had preceded them by four years. Sometime later the family moved into Pike County, Ohio. Robert received his education in Ohio and taught school there before moving to Illinois.
In 1832 John and Mary moved their family by boat down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River and poled the flat boat up the river to Grafton, then up the Illinois River to Naples where they landed. At that time Naples was in Morgan County, but when Morgan County was divided Naples was part of Scott County, Illinois.
John Morrison bought government land deeds near Oxville where the family settled. Later John acquired some 2000 acres in scattered sections and placed his sons (including Robert) on these farms or ranches.
In the meantime, James and Sara Gillham had homesteaded property four miles north of Winchester, Illinois. Robert Morrison was 21 years old when he arrived and took up farming on one of his father's farms, probably near the Gillham farm. Four years later in December 1836, Robert and Alvira were married. She was 15 1/2 years of age when they began housekeeping near Oxville. About the same time LeRoy Gillham, Alvira's older brother, married Robert's younger sister, Mary Morrison. LeRoy and Mary had three children before he died in 1844.
Robert Morrison continued farming until about 1840, when he went into the merchandizing business in Naples. At first he travelled to and from the farm, but in 1849 the family moved closer to Naples. The store faced East on the bank of the Illinois River. Just north of the store was the boat landing. The family recalled watching the loading and unloading operations through the iron bars in the back of the store. The merchandise consisted of groceries, dry goods and hardware. The Odd Fellows Hall was fitted in the room above the store.
In 1851 the banks of the Illinois River overflowed and Thomas, (then) aged three, recalled the ride in the skiff to dry ground. During the flooding the family went to Winchester and stayed with the Gillhams, Alvira's parents.
In 1854 Robert acquired property and a home southeast (6 1/2 miles) of Jacksonville, Illinois in the Pisgah District, in order to provide better education facilities for his growing family, which at that time consisted of two girls and four boys. The household goods came by wagons but the family traveled by train and had to wait until midnight for the wagons to arrive. The night was spent with Mrs. Estgher Newman, Alvira's sister.
The new home was of older construction and consisted of ten rooms, two large rooms or halls, and a porch. The two large rooms were built of hewn logs with a hallway between and were weather boarded on the outside and plastered on the inside. This home was replaced in 1866 with a modern two story home 32x42, with 13 bedrooms and a large cellar. A sketch of this farm in pen and ink was made in the summer of 1872 by Isaac Pitman and appeared in the Morgan County atlas.
In addition to farming, Robert Morrison was a livestock dealer, purchasing and shipping cattle to markets in Chicago and New York. His purchases were in such places as Laramie, Wyoming and St. Louis. One transaction, however, proved disastrous. Robert entered into a partnership arrangement to ship hogs to Chicago. His younger brother Richard and two Knowles boys delivered the hogs and received a check for $9000.00 The check was cashed and the money disappeared. A dective was employed and layed the blame on the Knowles boys, who were charged in court. The detective disappeared with the evidence. The case was in the courts for ten years and an out of court settlement was finally made for $1000.00. To cover the loss, the lovely home was mortgaged. During 1877 times were hard and the home was lost at a forced sale.
Before the home was lost the family had rented a house in Jacksonville so that the sons and daughters could attend Illinois College for men or Illinois Female College (the Atheneaum) for women. During this time Lizzie (Morrison) Humphrey's two daughters by her first marriage became part of the Morrison household and were sent to college with Robert's family. Robert was proud of the fact that five sons, two daughters, two granddaughters and two nieces all attended college in Jacksonville. He was also proud that all of them taught school at some time.
In 1874 Robert went intoi merchandising business again with his son, Thomas. A business was purchased in virginia, Illinois and was listed as T. A. Morrison and Company. Robert built a new home in Virginia, Illinois in 1877.
In 1876 Robert's daughter, Lizzie McMillan and son, William had gone into farming in the SW corner of Iowa. Thomas had sold the store and moved to the same area in Iowa. In 1882 Robert and Alvira packed up and moved to Iowa where they remained the rest of their days. Alvira had been in poor health for some time. She died on 21 April 1885 and was buried in Locust grove Cemetery, 14 miles south of Shenandoahy. Robert died 27 June 1889 and was buried beside his wife.
In Jacksonville at dignified occassions he was addressed with the honorary title of Dr. Robert Morrison. It is possible that an honorary degree was given to him for special service in the college community. Frequently among friends he was referred to affectionately as "Uncle Bobby". Alvira, his wife, was "our beloved mother" to her children. At her death a neighbor said, " I'd go many a mile to hear her lead in public prayer. She seemed to speak as though looking right into heaven." Her son, Charles, wrote that "the younger boys might go to school...how she shielded edveryone and spared not herself...that Christian resignation won her the friendship of all." 55

Other circumstantial evidence was furnished which showed that Andrew and James Morrison served at the same frontier fort (Day's Fort at Mill Point), and that Andrew's wife, Elizabeth Taylor had a brother Daniel Taylor who had settled in the Mill Point area about 1773, several years before the Morrison brothers got there about 1779. Conclusions from all of this evidence is attached as "Probable Scenario of Events Concerning Andrew and James Morrison".11. Morrison, Arthur C.; 2125 N. Olive Ave. Apt.
