granddaughter of Earl Siward of Northumbria, and had a legitimate claim to a
large part of northern England. David, one of the greatest Scottish Kings, was
brought up at the court of Henry I and played politics by switching his support
between Henry I's daughter Matilda and her cousin Stephen. On the death of
Henry I he took advantage of the resultant confusion to press into England,
taking Carlisle and Newcastle before he was defeated in 1138 at the Battle of
the Standard near Northallerton. King Stephen was in no position to alienate
the Scottish King and by the Treaty of Durham in 1139 David gained control of
Northumbria. He systematically transformed a Celtic society into a feudal one;
he encouraged Anglo-Norman tenants; he founded royal burghs (like Stirling,
Perth, Dunfermline & Edinburgh); he issued the first Scottish coinage; he
honoured his mother's legendary piety by establishing monastic centres at
Melrose & Holyrood. As well as imposing the rule of law on his kingdom, David
influenced linguistic developments so that while Gaelic was spoken by
Highlanders, Inglis, a Scottish varient of English, was adopted. His only son,
Henry, Earl of Huntingdon, died in 1152 and he appointed his grandson Malcom as
his successor.
