He also served as Capt. of the Second Co. of Militia in Edgartown in 1765. On
Mar 21st, 1776 he was one of three who were the committee for Edgartown to
draft a "Petition for more troops". In MA Archives XCV p209 it states "Capt.
Elijah Butler, Martha's Vineyard, was on a Committee of Seven to observe strict
conformity to the non-importation, exportation, and non-consumption association
recommended by the late Grand American Congress 1774-1778."
