226092868. William I "The Conqueror" King of England [Duke of Normandy]

"THE HOUSE OF NORMANDY: William I (The Conqueror) 1066-1087; Born 1027; Crowned at Westminster Abbey 25 Dec 1066; Buried at Caen...William was the natural son of Robert the Devil, Duke of Normandy, whom he had succeeded in 1035. His wife was Matilda of Flanders, a descendant of Alfred the Great and the Emperor Charlemagne. He was a shrewd, courageous, ruthless man, capable of mercy but also of inflicting exquisite tortures. King Harold II, the rightful king of England, left many children, but they were no match for William The Conqueror, the Norman usurper. Edgar, son of Edward the Exile and grandson of Ironside, was actually cosen king, but he submitted to William and was treated well by him: Edgar died in 1106, the last male member of the House of Wessex. William strove to cover up the break in the dynastic continuity by every possible means. So that he might know the scope and nature of his new kingdom, and assess taxation fairly, he caused to be made the survey called "The Doomsday Book". He was a highly efficient organiser & a good soldier. He rescued England from a state of perpetual anarchy. He died as a result of falling from his horse while engaged in fighting in France."

"...After the death of his father, Robert (the Devil), there followed 12 years of turmoil, with the murders of three of William's guardians. For some time he was kept in strict concealment by his relatives, who feared that he would meet the same fate. In 1051 the duke visited England and received from his kinsman, Edward the Confessor, a promise of the English succession. Two years later he strengthened his claim by marriage to Matilda, a daughter of Baldwin V of Flanders, who traced her descent in the female line from Alfred the Great. Fearing alliance of Normandy and Flanders, King Henry I of France joined forces with Geoffrey Martel to crush the Duke. Two battles resulted, with William victorious. Soon after the battle of Varaville both Henry I and Geoffrey Martel died. After sucessfully conquering Britain in 1070, after a 10 year series of battles, the Domesday Book shows that almost every English landholder of importance was dispossessed, though only those who had actually borne arms against William should have been treated this way. Englishmen were excluded as far as possible from responsible positions both in church and state. William was distinguished by the purity of his married life, by temperate habits and by sincere piety. His natural disposition was averse to unnecessary bloodshed or cruelty; the severe measures taken in conquest were part of his general policy."
