The king, wanting to have more power over the Church, thought he could best achieve that end by appointing his friend to be Archbishop of Canterbury. He misjudged his man. Becket considered his first loyalty to be the Church and not the king,& resisted the king's proposals, with the result that he was forced to flee the country. When he eventually returned it was only to be murdered in his own cathedral. That Henry caused Becket to be murdered can scarcely be doubted, for the king humbled himself and did singular repentance at the archbishop's tomb; but whether the murder was deliberate, or the result of hasty words spoken in anger, isn't certain. Aside from the murder of thomas Becket, Henry proved himself a successful if not great king. Though he was coarse in his manners, and given to outbursts of passion and violence, he was at the same time a man of letters, strong intellect and indominable will, and builder of palaces and churches. His reign was one of constitutional progress and territorial expansion. His queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, the divorced wife of King Louis VII of France, took a lively interest in politics. She abetted her sons when they rebelled against their father and was imprisoned."
