He might have filled well the role of a jolly country baron of his times, for he was fond of hunting and drinking, was good natured, kindly and affable, though also weak and worldly; but he was not of the stuff of which kings are made. His neglect of duty, and his weakness for favorites, made his reign one long tale of friction. His first favorite was Piers Gaveston, a Gascon noted for his insolence and unmatched extravagance. The king created him Earl of Cornwall, previously a royal title, which offended hereditary nobility. The king was loyal to his friend, even unto civil war. It availed him nothing, for Gaveston was captured and executed. Edward next gave his patronage to the Despencer family, and this caused further offence resulting in strife. Again his folly ended to his disadvantage for his enemies were aided by his own queen, Isabella, who had been embittered by his neglect of her, not only defeated him and executed the Despencers, father and son together, but eventually forced Edward to abdicate in favor of his own son, Edward III. He was murdered in Berkeley Castle a few months after his abdication, an object of compassion rather than hate, for folly not wickedness brought about his end."
