"Edward III (Of Windsor) 1327-1377; Born at Windsor 1312; Crowned at Westminster 1 Feb 1328; Buried at Westminster...For the first three years of his reign young King Edward had to watch his mother, Queen Isabella, aided by Roger Mortimer, Earl of March, mis-govern the kingdom. But in 1330 he seized them at Nottingham, had Mortimer hanged at Tyburn, & kept his mother in confinement. King Edward had considerable gifts. Grave, wise, capable and merciful, like his grandfather, he put these qualities to good use. He further developed Parliament, enacted reformatory statutes, founded the Order of the Gartr, that most famous of orders of chivalry. He also had to deal with the economic & social difficulties which resulted from about a third of the population being destroyed in the terrible tragedy of the Black Death, losing his own daughter, Joan. He is most noted in history for initiating the Hundred Year War, ostensibly to pursue his claim, through his mother, to the throne of France. The prolonged conflict was too desultory to be of much benefit to either side. During his reign the famous warrior, the Black Prince, won his laurels at Poitiers. King Edward lost his popularity towards the end of his reign becoming involved with a woman of little worth, Alice Perres, when his queen, Philippa, the daughter of Count William of Hainault, died in 1369, & when there was endless conflict between his son, John of Gaunt, and Parliament. Finally, in 1376, his favorite son, Edward the Black Prince, died, and as if ti were more than the old man could bear, he himself died soon afterward."
