Sir Robert Harley 1st Earl of Oxford
1A.S. Turberville, A History of Welbeck Abbey and It's Owners, Faber and Faber Limited; 24 Russell Square, London, pp.274-289, 2 May 1999, Family History Library, 35 N West Temple Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84150 USA, USA, 729.242/C315t; Vol I. "Known as the most famous Harley in English History, Lord Treasurer and first Earl of Oxford. Although generally associated with the Church of England party, he was always looked upon as a defender of the interests of the Dissenters. An assassination attempt was made upon Sir Robert by Guiscard. In 1714, with his position undermined by Bolingbroke, and with Abigail Masham transferring her allegiance to the more fascinating Bolingbroke, the heart of the Queen (Anne) had been turned. At a stormy meeting of the Council on 27 July Oxford was dismissed. The Queen fiercely attacked him, declaring he had often become drunk in her presence, and had behaved himself towards her with bad manners, indecency, and disrespect. (Less than 5 days later, Queen Anne lay dead). The accession of George I brought truimph for the Whigs, and Bolingbroke fled to the Continent; but Oxford stood his ground with moral courage, and on 20 July 1715, he was formally impeached at the bar of the House of Lords of treason and high crimes and misdemeanours. Oxford conducted himself with calm dignity, and went in his own coach on 27 Jul 1715, accompanied by members of his family, to the Tower of London. There he remained for two years, until on 24 June 1717, trial was opened at Westminster Hall. The Lords withdrew to their own House and unanimously declared the Earl of Oxford acquitted."

"...Because he had no sons, Geoffrey Martel, son of Fulk, left his county, Anjou and Touraine which he had conquered, to his nepheews, Geoffrey the Bearded and Fulk Rechin. He gave Anjou and Saintonge to Geffrey and Touraine and Chateau-Landon to Fulk. Martel was seized by an unexpected illness, an incurable sickness which grew worse from day to day, and he suffered right up to his death, dying in great pain amidst his family."
