William II "Rufus" King Of ENGLAND
1Pitkin Pictorials LTD, Britain's Kings & Queens, Garrod & Lofthouse International, LTD; 1974, p7, 11 Mar 1998, Dianne Wintch, 510 Gays Drive, Marysville, WA 98271, USA, e-mail: lauray8@gte.net. "King William II, called 'Rufus' supposedly because of his ruddy complexion, was a man illtempered and little in mind and stature. By his oppression and cruelty he was "loathsome to well nigh all his people". But he was at least a brave and capable warrior. He fought sucessfully in France. Though he reclaimed much of the land which had been laid waste by his father, only his cruelty and greed were well remembered, and few tears were shed when he was killed, probably accidentally, when hunting in the New Forest; indeed the clergy at Winchester Cathedral refused religious rites to his remains."

On William's death-bed Normandy was bequeathed to Robert, while Rufus was desinated as king of England. He was crowned at Westminster on Sept. 26, 1087, fifteen days after the death of his father."
