Henry I "Beauclerc" King Of ENGLAND [I]

1Pitkin Pictorials LTD, Britain's Kings & Queens, Garrod & Lofthouse International, LTD; 1974, p7, 11 Mar 1998, Dianne Wintch, 510 Gays Drive, Marysville, WA 98271, USA, e-mail: lauray8@gte.net. "Henry I (Beauclerc) 1100-1135; Born at Selby, Yorkshire, 1070; Crowned at Westminster Abbey 6 Aug 1100; buried at Reading...King William II's younger brother, Henry was scholarly and well educated. His marriage to Matilda of Scotland, g-g-dau of King Edmund Ironside, did much to win back the English sympathy, which had been alienated by his brother, William II, (called Rufus, supposedly because of his ruddy complexion). King Henry did much to correct the abuse his brother William imposed on the coffers of England. He also did much for the judicial and fiscal system of his kingdom, & curbed the growing power & ambitions of the barons. His only son, William, was drowned in the wreck of the White Ship. With the succession in doubt, he persuaded his nobles, headed by his nephew, Stephen, to swear support to the succession of his daughter, Matilda. However, upon Henry's death, Stephen immediately claimed the throne himself. Eventually, in 1153, by the treaty of Wallingford, Matilda's son, Henry, was acknowledged as heir apparent to the throne, Stephen's issue being excluded."
